I saw a lot of posts in the net regarding the incompatibility of HP PSC Scanner/printer with windows 2003 Server. I also experienced these problems, but finally got both the scanner and the printer working.
In reality HP does not offer compatible drivers for Windows 2003 on their website.
Here is the tip:
1: Do not install anything. Just plug in and use it. Everything should work fine. I did not follow the rule. I became super technical and played with all kind of things, including register settings. The printer worked, but the scanner did not.
2: If you have already failed on rule 1: or it does not work for you, this is what you need to do.
a) Disconnect the printer cable (USB)
b) Do a repair of the Windows 2003 Server installation. (Reboot with 2003 install disk, install and select repair option).
c) Once the repair is complete, reboot and then put the printer cable back in
d) The system will detect HP PSC 720 (one of 700 series) printer. Let the system choose the drivers. Complete the installation. Do not install any driver or choose from a CD. Windows 2003 comes with drivers for this printer/scanner already.
e) You will notice that HP PSC 720 scanner is added to Imaging Devices section of your device manager tree.
f) Test your printer and scanner. (I used Microsoft Office Imaging and Scanner & Camera Wizard). It should work, even for HP PSC 750.
g) Now you can be a little adventurous. From the device manager tree, select the printer and scanner each and update the drivers to your specific model. (HP PSC 750, if your model is that)
